What: Sancho and company hold a little seance.
When: Towards the end of Week 1.
Where: Sancho's house on the West end.
Content warnings: Death, depression, and dubious magics.

As a high-ranking Maester of the Veiled Lady's temple and as someone with little scruples about how he uses his gifts, Sancho Cabrera has enough income to have his own property on the West end of the city. His residence is a house built of warm colored stone with a tasteful amount of architectural detailing. It looks as though it ought to be a family home, rather than the residence of a single man who works with corpses for a living.

To be fair he usually shares his space with a handful of servants who keep house for him, but he's given his servants time off "for the Grand Festival" and tonight it's just Sancho in the building. There's not a glimmer of lantern or fireplace to be seen, and the building is as quiet as the grave while Sancho awaits his invited guests.

Happy first week of After We Break, dear Editors! Welcome to Rivers’ End, and the festival of all-gods. There’s been a lot going on during the festivities, so here’s your mid-Story round-up of what everyone’s been up to.

Upcoming events

As a reminder, the next Story Log will be going up on May 8th, and with it – all the gods will die. The suffering Chosen will run mad. Enjoy the peace and plenty of the festival while it lasts!

Skill Update: Broken skills

With the deaths of the gods coming Log 2, the Chosen will find themselves with the following Broken versions of their skills instead:

Broken Veil: (1 point) You can call upon the dead to fight, but there is no assurance that they will be on your side, as there is nothing more to command them.
Broken Justice: (1 point) You can compel the truth out of another, but they are capable of telling partial or deceiving truths.
Broken Flow: (1 point) You are capable of easily slipping into a mental space where you are able to do good work; however this state is stagnant, and you will not be improving your ability. Items created during this state may have one better-than-normal property, but you don't really learn anything from making them.
Broken Tide: (1 point) You enter a state of unbridled aggression, checked by nothing and no one. Your strength and agility increase massively, but you can no longer tell friend from foe.

Editors who played Chosen during the Story will still have the option to purchase the two-point unBroken version of the skill, or the one-point Broken version, as they desire; however, the skills are mutually exclusive, and you cannot buy both.

Plot directions

The Chosen will be running mad – who is going to stop them??
Certain information about the war will be coming to light – too late to stop the hostilities, obviously, but perhaps there will be opportunities to pick up the pieces in unexpected ways ...
Even after the Chosen have been subdued, the damage they do to Rivers' End and its people will be significant. Who will help pick up the pieces?

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY GHOSTS HERE?

Right, sorry, this is Chie Satonaka? Sumire said that last time there was a story, she accidentally did a check-in for everyone in the journals, so I thought maybe I could do one on purpose. Maybe we can pool information about who we know is a story character and who we know is still normal? And figure out what we're here for.

So I'll start. I'm Chie and I'm myself and so is Sumire—we ended up going into the book together and came out in the same place. I think maybe the girl fairy is a story character? I saw someone who looked like she might as a human working at a stall at the festival, along with some other guy I don't recognize in a witch hat. Also Nabiki is definitely a story character because I found her at a booth for one of the gods and she's like nearly twice her regular age and has reading glasses.

OH also Claire is here playing music for money and she asked me if I was a Chosen of the Librarian and I think that's a really good question for us to use to signal we're us if we think we see people we know in the story.

Happy Wednesday!

I'm taking search offline sometime today to upgrade the server to a new instance type. It should be down for a day or so -- sorry for the inconvenience. If you're curious, the existing search machine is over 10 years old and was starting to accumulate a decade of cruft...!

Also, apparently these older machines cost more than twice what the newer ones cost, on top of being slower. Trying to save a bit of maintenance and cost, and hopefully a Wednesday is okay!

Edited: The other cool thing is that this also means that the search index will be effectively realtime afterwards... no more waiting a few minutes for the indexer to catch new content.

I've... well I'm running low on my makeup and was hoping that someone might either have or be able to get the materials so I can make some more? I'd just get it all myself but I've not yet mastered the trick to pulling things from the books.

It's nothing too complex, just a muller, a mortar and pestle, a basket of broodscales, iron oxide, almond oil, and beeswax. If you've a particular shade you like, I'd be willing to make another batch in exchange, but you'd need to provide the jar.
